Tuesdays With Dorie Cinnamon (And Chocolate) Squares

twd cinnamon square

My husband’s sweet great-grandmother is 91 years old. Until very recently she would still cook and bake her favorite recipes. One of the things she’s famous for is her chocolate pie, made with homemade pie crust and a fudgy filling.  Everyone loves them, especially my sister-in-law.  Last Christmas she sent over a couple of pies for everyone to enjoy, and when my sister-in-law took her first bite she made a funny face and said, “What’s wrong with this pie?”  My mother-in-law tried a bite and said, “It tastes like cinnamon.”  It soon became obvious that great-grandmother had mistaken the cinnamon for the cocoa powder.
Similarly, the name of this week’s Tuesdays with Dorie selection can be a little deceiving.  Don’t let the name fool ya. Even though they’re named Cinnamon Squares, these treats are not only full of cinnamon-sugary goodness, they’re swirled with chocolate and espresso powder, and topped with satiny chocolate icing (no rest for the chocolate weary this time).

I can say this – I like cinnamon-y things with chocolate in them, but not necessarily chocolaty things with cinnamon. So, luckily this was something I did enjoy.  I tried a piece without the icing, and it was great that way, too.  Check out Tracey’s blog, Tracey’s Culinary Adventures, to get the recipe and the Tuesdays With Dorie blogroll for the other members’ versions.

One suggestion: give a little heads up when serving this to others so they won’t be too surprised by the flavors!

  1. That’s a cute story about your great-grandmother!
Your Cinnamon Cake looks really tasty with the cinnamon/chocolate ribbon swirled around the middle and the frosting looking satiny! I like the plate it’s served on also, beautiful!

  2. Your cake looks beautiful! I’ve finally accepted that I love cinnamon and love chocolate but really don’t care for them together. Of course, this is a Dorie cake, so I enjoyed it (even the chocolate version!) anyway.

  3. That’s a tempting looking piece of cake! Chocolate with cinnamon could be good, but cinnamon instead of chocolate in that pie doesn’t sound so great!

  4. Hmmm…I never thought of that chocolate cinnamon distinction before but I bet that would apply to a lot of people.
